Huawei is expected to launch the next flagship in the honor lineup called the Huawei Honor 6 Plus

huawei-honor-6-plus-4.jpg
Huawei is expected to launch the next flagship in the honor lineup called the Huawei Honor 6 Plus on 16 December 2014. The device has already passed TENAA certification, which is the Chinese equipment certification agency. Recent rumors indicate that the Honor 6 Plus will come with two camera sensors at the back. This dual camera system may offer 3D capture or even a refocus feature like the setup found on the HTC One M8's Duo Camera. Expected tech specs include 1.8 Ghz Kirin SoC, 3GB RAM, 16/32GB internal storage options, MicroSD card slot which support cards up to 64GB, 5.5 inch 1080p display, 150.4 x 75.68 x 7.5mm dimensions, dual camera system and Android 4.4 Kitkat OS. There are two models listed in the TENAA database for the Honor 6 Plus, one with the model number PE-TL10 and the other with PE-UL00. However, the only difference between the two models according to the website is in the supported network bands, with the PE-TL10 getting an additional TD-SCDMA band. Unfortunately, there are no details on the Malaysia pricing or commercial availability of the phone just yet, but we don't think you'll have to wait too long to get this information.

Udemy CEO: “Asia is an incredible opportunity for us”

Udemy, the online learning marketplace that aims to democratize education, is making international expansion a priority in 2015, says CEO Dennis Yang.

An enthusiastic Yang recently told Tech in Asia he believes that his company has a good shot at “scaling and democratizing education” using technology and bringing Udemy outside of the US.

“If you want to scale education, you can’t just build schools. You have to use technology,” he says.

Current data has given the ed-tech startup early signals that it could prove popular internationally. Yang told me that markets outside of the US account for 66 percent of Udemy’s total site visits and 45 percent of its total sales. APAC countries like Singapore, Australia, and India are hungry for Udemy, Yang told me, drawing a growth chart on a whiteboard as he spoke.

Today Udemy offers over 21,000 courses and is adding 1,000 courses per month. Over 10,000 instructors are serving its four million students across 190 countries. On average, every instructor makes about US$7,000 with some exceptional cases like the instructor who made over US$66,000 in a month.

So how does Udemy plan to expand abroad? Part of that answer is partnerships. “We can potentially work with media, government, and education agencies as long as we have the same goal in mind,” he says. For such partnerships, Udemy is hoping to attract more locally-created courses as well as students to build on top of its existing ecosystem. To reduce payment friction, Udemy has a dedicated team of engineers to improve payments processing around the world.

“We are currently working with Paypal and Stripe. But overseas, we have to look for local payment partners that do a good job. We’re investing in making transactions on the platform work seamlessly,” he adds.

“Asia is an incredible opportunity for us”

With the rise of Android in Asia, Udemy looks prepared to serve many mobile-first developing countries in Asia which have sub-par internet connection. A “Udemy” search on Google Play surfaces hundreds of Udemy Android apps featuring different types of courses. These apps are different from the desktop version, allowing users to download lesson videos within the app rather than streaming them directly. This feature, though small, is a lifesaver in countries where a flaky internet connection is the norm.

Udemy’s CEO Dennis Yang

Udemy currently has offices in Dublin, Ireland and Ankara, Turkey and is seriously considering somewhere in Asia for its next office. Yang doesn’t have a specific time frame or country to share but gave some preliminary thoughts on regional markets:

China is a little more difficult market to grab. It is a unique market, same for Japan and needs dedicated effort. Compare [that to] India, Singapore, and Australia where English is used; it is an easier transition [there].

With US$48 million of total funding raised so far and over 100 employees across its offices, Udemy seems poised to bring its service outside of the US in 2015. “International expansion is a big thing for us now and Asia is an incredible opportunity for us,” says Yang.

Its biggest challenge, says Yang, will be to ensure that international users are having a great experience and getting value from Udemy’s instructors.

Singapore’s Inzen Studio raises biggest funding round ever by a Singaporean game studio

Singapore-based Inzen Studio, a two-year-old mobile game developer, has raised S$935,000 (US$717,288) in a series A round from investors in Singapore, China, and Japan. This is the largest funding round a game studio in Singapore has received to date (as far as we know). The record was previously held by Daylight Studios, which raised a S$839,000 (US$661,000) round led by Red Dot Ventures.

Inzen Studio announced a S$550,000 round last December from angel investors Hans de Back and Harveen Narulla.

Its latest funding round was led by Incubate Fund, followed by the Global Mobile Game Confederation (GMGC) and Singapore-based angel investor Melvin Tan. Inzen Studio is both Incubate Fund’s and GMGC’s first game studio investment.

The Inzen team has expanded from five founders to a total of 13 team members based in Singapore and Uruguay. The startup’s founding team is from the now-defunct Singapore-MIT Gambit Game Lab, the other half of whom went on to form the SUTD Game Lab following the studio’s closure.

Inzen Studio has also announced that two of its games will be making their way to China. Co-founder and CEO Gerald Tock says that “a tactical free-form formation shmup, an online multi-touch projectile rebounding PvP game, and a couple more” are in the works. Given the studio’s present portfolio, it’s easy to guess that its mobile arcade games Dark Dot and Nightmare Duel will be the ones first heading into China.

You shall not pass! Sina Weibo will ban and silence accounts that push users towards WeChat

Much has been written over the past few years about the battle between Sina Weibo and Tencent’s WeChat. They may be radically different services – the former is a microblogging platform, the latter is a mobile chat app – but they’re still competing for the time and mindshare of China’s social media users. Most of the competition has been indirect, but now Sina is reportedly firing a shot across Tencent’s bow by threatening to silence Weibo accounts that promote their WeChat accounts to followers.

According to TechWeb, Sina Weibo announced late on Tuesday that Weibo accounts publicizing and promoting WeChat public accounts (the accounts favored by companies and public figures that can broadcast to large numbers of people) may be subject to being silenced or even having their Weibo accounts shut down. Offenders have until noon on Wednesday to avoid punishment by removing any offending materials, which might include promotional background images, WeChat follower services being provided on Weibo, and more.

Sina is also encouraging users to report other users they see violating this policy.

Some analysts see the move as retribution for a change WeChat made earlier this week that blocked some Kuaidi Dache functionality. Sina is not directly invovled with Kuaidi Dache, but the two companies share a common investor in Tencent rival Alibaba. Still, it may be more likely that the change is just an attempt by Sina to be sure companies aren’t using their Weibo accounts to guide users away from Weibo.

ZOOZ N910F Review: The $140 Note 4 Clone with a heart rate monitor

A few days back, we covered the newly announced ZOOZ N910F Note 4 Clone. The device came with decent specifications and it looked exactly like the Samsung Galaxy Note 4. In fact the design was so similar to the Note 4 that if you didn’t turn on the display or see the logo on the back, you will most likely mistake it for the Note 4.
Like always, we managed to get the device in our hands recently which means we got to review and assess the performance of the device.
So, lets get on with it.

DESIGN

2
If you are looking for a phone which is like the Galaxy Note 4, the new ZOOZ N910F gets full points here. The dimensions of the device is exactly the same as the Note 4, 153.5mm x 78.6mm x 8.5mm. There’s a 5.7 inch display up front, above which lies the front camera and sensor. Below the display lies the standard Samsung home button.
12
Coming to the back, you have a 13MP sensor with a single LED flash. Below the flash is the ZOOZ logo and at the bottom lies the speaker grill.
The volume rocker keys and the power buttons are on the opposite sides. It features a power button on the right around the middle section (which is the ideal location for such a large phone), while the volume rockers keys lies on the top left corner of the device.
We were actually quite impressed with its design, the way ZOOZ managed to replicate the exact dimensions and design as the original Note 4.

DISPLAY

15
Like the Note 4, you have a large 5.7 inch display on the front. However, unlike the design, the display is nothing like the Note 4. You get a 1280 x 720 pixel resolution on such a large screen which naturally translates into an average display. The pixel density of the screen comes to just about 257 pixels per inch, which is very low when compared to other devices in the market. So, for a large display like the Note 4, you will have to sacrifice on quality.
16

HARDWARE & PERFORMANCE

The device comes with a Mediatek MT6582 1.3GHz Quad Core processor along with 1GB RAM. For storage, you have 8GB which can be further expanded up to 32GB using a MicroSD card slot.
With these decent specifications, the device performs quite well. Apps opened up smoothly and we experienced little lag. So, the overall performance was satisfactory.
11
On the back, you get a 2,600 mAh battery which should have been more than enough, if it had been a regular sized smartphone. However, with the extra large 5.7 inch screen up front, the display will take a toll on its battery life. We didn’t get the opportunity to fully test its battery life, but we feel, with moderate usage it may just make it to the end of the day.

CAMERA

ZOOZ N910F comes with a 13Mp rear camera with LED flash. The device clicks decent pictures, but its no Sony sensor and you will know it immediately as the images sometimes come out unclear.
Still, for the price you pay, the rear camera and the 5MP front shooter can be used for your basic everyday camera needs.
Here’s a few shots we clicked with its camera. As you can see, the images look fine and colors too came out okay.
SOFTWARE & OTHER FEATURES
1
The ZOOZ N910F runs on Android 4.4 Kitkat out of the box. It also comes with some special features which makes it worthy of being called as the Note 4 clone.
4
The device comes with a pressure sensitive capacitive stylus called as the S Pen, a rarity in a device of its class. Further, you get a heart rate monitor and blood oxygen level indicator, sports pedometer and even an infrared remote control feature which works with majority of the devices at your home.
Then there are certain software features like double tap to light up the screen and simple gestures for turning pages in an e-book on the device without physical touch.
14
As for the connectivity features, you have Wi-Fi b/g/n, Bluetooth 4.30+EDR, GPS/AGPS, USB 2.0 and FM Radio.
5

VERDICT

6
All in all, the ZOOZ N910F does have some special features to keep buyers interested.
The device is expected to sell for less than $140 which is a great price considering the features and specifications that comes loaded on this Note 4 Clone.
Check out our hands on video for a better idea.
So, what do you think about the ZOOZ N910F? Would you pick one for yourself this holiday season?

iPad Air 2 and iPhone 6 Hide a Secret: They Support 4K Video Covertly!

You’re probably wondering why Apple put all that processing power and new cameras on the latest iPads and iPhones, but didn’t give them higher resolution video playback feature. After all, the screen of the iPad Air 2 has an impressive resolution, that begs to play a cool 4K vid. Well, apparently you can play with 4K on these products.
4k-video-iPhone-640x400
The iPad Air 2 and iPhone 6 Plus both come with 4K video playback out of the box, courtesy of the Apple A8/A8X processor, as it turns out. Apple didn’t list 4K video playback as one of the Apple A8 features, but some developers have uncovered proof of that and posted it here. They’ve found it on the iPhone 6 and then Cult of Mac found the same thing on the iPad Air 2. Must Read:How to backup imessages to icloud ?
4K video works on both devices and playback has been described as “buttery smooth” for videos, as long as they’re relying on the H.264 codec, while .MOV and .AVI 4K videos will also play, with minor glitches. Of course, the iPhone 6 units don’t have native 4K resolutions, so their support is useless, but this may be a hint towards a future Apple 4K TV or tablet…
